After Cook’s voyages, a steady flow of Europeans arrived in New Zealand, getting involved in a range of diverse activities; trading, and gold mining, to whaling and sealing. These interactions between British and Maori, while creating moments of peaceful trade, also caused fights and arguments, particularly due to the trade of firearms (guns called muskets)(see left). The presence of whalers and sealers, living along the coast, left a great impact on Maori communities. |
